(Mountain View, CA) –PointBase, Inc., the leader in Java database and synchronization technology for managing enterprise data among servers, mobile and pervasive computing devices, has announced the general availability of PointBase 4.2, the latest upgrade to its family of pure Java, small-footprint database management solutions – PointBase Server, PointBase Embedded and PointBase Micro. The PointBase family of products is a set of horizontal technologies providing SQL database and data synchronization capabilities to Java applications running on any Java-enabled platform. Developers use PointBase as the foundation for building portable, database-driven, sync-enabled applications. With more than one million seats deployed across sixty customer sites, PointBase's pure Java technology delivers the database of choice when price matters, with lower hardware requirements and very low maintenance. Enhancements to the PointBase 4.2 product suite include Autoincrement, also known as Identity Columns, and API functionality for loading and unloading SQL data to and from a database. Many applications developed today require a way to generate a unique number for each row inserted into a table. The Autoincrement functionality provides a means to generate unique values, which can be used as Primary Keys. Two callback methods specified by JDBC 3.0 are provided to retrieve the numbers. Developers no longer have to create and maintain their own code for producing sequences of numbers - a problem that can be complex, particularly with multi-user database access. The Load/Unload API is accessible through Java programs, enabling developers to have programmatic control of loading and unloading data which developers will find useful when producing customized backup and recovery tools.
