A preview version of the MeeGo OS for mobile phones has been pushed out for developers with the full blown 1.1 version expected in October . The release includes MeeGo APIs (application programming interfaces), a reference user interface and applications including a status bar, lock screen, application launcher, onscreen keyboard, phone dialer, short message service client, browser, contacts application and photo viewer. The OS is compatible with Nokia N900 devices and Intel Atom-based devices. Nokia and Intel merged their respective operating systems, Maemo and Moblin to create MeeGo, in February. The netbook version was already released in May. Nokia is banking on the thought that shifting to Meego OS from Symbian for its N-series high end smartphones will give it a much needed boost to compete with the ever popular iPhone and the growing number of Android handsets. Nokia's N8 smartphone will be the last N-series phone to be powered by Symbian software. The source code, Screenshots and video of MeeGo can be found at http://meego.com/devices/handset.
