Intel Swears Off Discrete Graphics Chip
It believes media/HD video and mobile computing are the most important areas to focus on moving forward

Intel said in a blog Tuesday by spokesman Bill Kircos that it won't be bringing a discrete graphics chip to market any time soon so AMD and Nvidia can rest easy in their beds. "As we said in December," he wrote, referring to the multi-core Larrabee, "we missed some key product milestones. Upon further assessment, and as mentioned above, we are focused on processor graphics, and we believe media/HD video and mobile computing are the most important areas to focus on moving forward. We will also continue with ongoing Intel architecture-based graphics and HPC-related R&D and proof of concepts." Intel had hopes of salvaging a high-end graphics chip out of Larrabee even when Larrabee itself proved a non-starter.
