Intel has released its first storage-optimized Atom-based platform for networked home and SOHO storage devices.

The D410 single-core and D510 dual-core chips run Windows Home Server and Linux.

LaCie, LG Electronics, QNAP, Synology and Thecus are using the platform, which includes six PCI Express lanes, 12 USB 2.0 ports, a port multiplier function and eSATA ports for adding peripheral devices and expanding storage capacity outside of the box. It has hot-plug capabilities and an integrated gigabit Ethernet MAC controller too.

Intel says the chips are 50% more energy efficient and perform better than its last Atom generation.

It also trotted out two single-core Atoms, the N450 and D410, and the first dual-core Atom processor, the D510, for embedded devices. There's also a new conventional N470 single-core Atom that's spec'd at 1.83GHz, up from 1.66GHz, bound for higher-end netbooks.
