Oracle, sensibly enough from Oracle's point-of-view, has turned off the tap of development resources on Sun's Project Wonderland, the 100% Java open source toolkit for creating collaborative 3D virtual worlds.

However, a core group of diehard Wonderlanders means to keep the project going and is scouting out for-project and non-profit options for becoming self-sustaining.

"Having anticipated this possible outcome," it says on the Wonderland blog, "we already have some promising irons in the fire."

They'll start by releasing Wonderland 0.5 Preview 3.

Three companies are thought to be selling Wonderland-related products and eight offering Wonderland world-build services.
